Rayong province is well-known by Thai people but has been largely overlooked by farang (foreigners). With more than 100 kilometres (62 miles) of coastline, Rayong has plenty of beautiful beaches that remain virtually untouched. However the province has traditionally focused on fishing, agriculture and industry rather than tourism, like most other Thai provinces. The result is an untouched and off the beaten path Thai paradise! What would you like to know about Rayong?
Highest Rated Beach in Rayong
At 10 kilometres (over 6 miles) in length, Mae Rumphueng Beach is the most popular and highest ranked beach in all of Rayong. (It is also occasionally misspelled “Ramphueng” thanks to TripAdvisor.) What makes these accolades even more impressive is that the beach is deserted on weekdays and practically deserted on the weekends.
Much More Than Just Beaches
Rolling hills dot the coastline and larger limestone mountains dominate the northern part of the province, resulting in a scenic and diverse natural landscape that is lush with jungles, gorgeous waterfalls and plenty of wildlife. Outdoor activities abound, including mountain ziplining, hiking, mangrove forests and scenic view points.
Cannot Forget the Islands
Koh Samet is the jewel of Rayong and the nicest island around. It is visible from the beach and accessible via a short ferry ride from one of the piers in Ban Phe. The island’s interior is thickly wooded but countless resorts line the beaches of the north and eastern sides, sandwiched in between jungle and ocean. Even longtime expat residents of Rayong head out to Koh Samet on a monthly basis for a vacation away from their vacation home 😉
Khao Laem Ya – Mu Ko Samet National Park is located in Rayong, Thailand just down the street from Mae Rumphueng Beach. Comprised of 81,875 rai (131 square kilometres or 50 square miles), the national park is actually split into two portions.
The first half of Khao Laem Ya Mu Ko Samet National Park is on the mainland next to Ban Phe and Mae Rumphueng Beach. The huge hilltop here can be dominates the coastline and can be seen many kilometres away.
Since opening a couple years ago, Pizzeria Sofia has gained a reputation as the best pizza in Rayong — and possibly all of Thailand! (Menu photos further down.) Located right in front of The Royal Rayong, the smell of Sofia’s gourmet pizzas drifting down Mae Rumphueng Beach is irresistible.
